This is not a rehearsal. The Festival du nouveau cinéma (FNC) really opens today.

After months of planning and a last few weeks of frantic preparations, the 36th edition of an event that screens the best of the year in the international festival circuit and the latest in new work from cutting-edge artists opens with an invitation-only gala at the Imperial Cinema tonight.

The opening film is Durs à cuire, a documentary debut from Montrealer Guillaume Sylvestre that follows the volatile careers of local top chefs Normand Laprise (Toqué) and Martin Picard (Au Pied de Cochon).

It is the first item on an FNC menu that offers up 300 films from 40 countries in five downtown locations until Oct. 21.

They include new work from such world-famous names as Barbet Schroeder, Carlos Saura, Claude Chabrol, Todd Haynes, Guy Maddin, Peter Greenaway, Brian De Palma and Denys Arcand, with the local debut of his new film L'Âge des ténèbres.

There are debuts behind the camera for actors Gael Garcia Bernal, Sandrine Bonnaire, Charlotte Laurier, and Jean Leclerc, better known in his former incarnation as Quebec rock star Jean Leloup.

There are tributes, a children's section and a series of talks and installations titled The Future of Cinema. There are also 23 free events planned for SAT (Société des arts technologiques), on lower St. Laurent Blvd., and in a giant tent that has gone up in the park beside it.

The first SAT event is an after-party for Durs à cuire. Laprise and Picard will be there. Food is expected.

The 36th Festival du nouveau cinéma continues until Oct. 21 in Ex-Centris, 3536 St. Laurent Blvd; the Imperial Theatre, 1430 Bleury St.; the Cinémathèque québécoise, 335 de Maisonneuve Blvd. E.; and SAT, 1195 St. Laurent Blvd.

Regular tickets cost $10. Six-ticket booklets cost $50 and FNC passes, good for everything but opening and closing night, are $100, including the $10 catalogue. There are discounts for seniors and students. For more information, call 866-844-2172, or construct your own schedule at www.nouveaucinema.ca.
