Hard rockers System of a Down rocketed to the top of the Canadian charts for the second time in less than seven months.

The L.A.-based band's latest disc "Hypnotize" accomplished the feat with first week sales of 47,000, according to data compiled by Nielsen SoundScan Canada.

It marks the third consecutive No. 1 debut for the group. "Mezmerize," released in May, sold 48,000 copies in its first week, while their sophomore effort, 2001's "Toxicity," reached the top spot with sales of 14,000.

SOAD also grabbed the No. 1 spot south of the border, selling 324,000 copies of "Hypnotize" in the U.S., according to Billboard.com.

Back here in Canada, SOAD's big debut was bad news for Madonna.

Her new effort "Confessions" was forced out of the No. 1 spot after only one week, moving down to No. 2, with sales of her album dipping from 74,000 last week to 31,000 this week -- a drop of 57 per cent.

Il Divo's "Ancora" (24,000) slipped from No. 2 to No. 3, while Enya's first new album in five years, "Amarantine," had the second highest debut of the week at No. 4.

Diana Krall's "Christmas Songs" held steady at No. 5, "MuchDance 2006" sank two spots to No. 6, and "Big Shiny Tunes 10" checked in at No. 7.

The Black Eyed Peas' "Monkey Business" remained at No. 8, Nickelback's "All the Right Reasons" claimed the No. 9 position, and Green Day's "Bullet in a Bible" fell seven notches down to No. 10.

Other notable debuts included Canadian Idol winner Melissa O'Neil's self-titled debut album at No. 16, Jean Leloup's "1985 - 2005: Je Joue De La Guita" at No. 18, Isabelle Boulay's "Du Temps Pour Toi" at No. 24, Michael Buble's "Caught In the Act" at No. 26, and Corneille's "Les Marchands De Reves" at No. 38.

In the U.S., Kenny Chesney's "The Road and the Radio" placed second, followed by NOW! 20 in third, Madonna in fourth, and the soundtrack to the 50 Cent film "Get Rich or Die Tryin'" 20 in fifth.
